FDA and FTC Censorship Fails to Prop Up Collapsing Pharmaceutical Industry

Despite FDA attempts to prohibit the use of dietary supplements for the treatment and prevention of disease and FTC censorship of health information regarding the successes attained with dietary supplements, the pharmaceutical industry is set to lose $50 billion in the coming year alone. There are several reasons behind this loss, including the fact that the blush is off the Big Pharma rose for consumers: they want something better. FTC Censorship Of Safe Nutritional Supplements Forces Reliance on Dangerous Drugs

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA–(Marketwire – Feb. 15, 2011) – In the wake of the FTC crack-down on manufacturers of dietary supplements, a new report shows that not even one death occurred from vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids or other dietary supplements in 2009. FTC censorship of dietary supplements is allegedly intended to protect consumers. In light of this new report, says the Wellness Truth Network, it is difficult to see just why the FTC is so concerned. Is the commission really acting in the best interests of Americans?

The report, prepared by the American Association of Poison Control Centers and published in the journal Clinical Toxicology, details the data collected by 60 coast-to-coast poison centers for the U.S. National Poison Data System. According to the report, no fatalities were associated with herbs or nutritional supplements for the entirety of 2009.

In contrast, adverse reactions from drugs that are properly prescribed and properly administered cause about 106,000 deaths per year, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In fact, prescription drugs are now the fourth-leading cause of death in the U.S.

Additionally, some sources have reported as many as 700,000 visits to U.S. hospital emergency rooms each year as a result of adverse drug reactions.

Ironically, some of the drugs causing adverse reactions and fatalities are given for conditions that could be successfully addressed with some of the safe nutritional supplements being targeted by FTC censorship.

According to Bob Held, CEO of Wellness Truth Network (WTN), “Treatment and prevention of Diabetes with nutritional supplements could, for example, prevent the nausea, diarrhea, low blood glucose, skin rash or itching, and weight gain caused by some medications prescribed for diabetics. The effort to control those side effects might also lead to prescriptions for additional medications that, in turn, could have their own side effects that may also have to be controlled by additional drugs. It’s a never-ending cycle.”

Despite the availability of drugs for Diabetes, more than 70,000 Americans die from Diabetes each year. And, with more than 2 million new Diabetes cases being diagnosed each year, it’s obvious that the drug route is not controlling this epidemic.

“The public wants healthy solutions,” says Held. “It’s hard to figure out just who or what the FTC is protecting by trying to prevent the use of nutritional supplements. One thing we know for sure, it’s not the health of Americans.”

Do You Have a Prescription for Those Walnuts? Wellness Truth Network challenges FTC censorship

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA–(Marketwire – Jan. 5, 2011) – According to recent statements by the Wellness Truth Network (WTN) in Pasadena, CA., the FTC and FDA, who have a long history of censorship of natural remedies, are attempting to classify natural substances which are proven to help in the prevention of heart disease as drugs.

As the US population ages, big Pharma stands to make billions of dollars from patentable drugs for heart disease and other ailments related to aging. According to Bob Held, CEO of WTN, the actions of the FTC in suppressing and over-regulating natural remedies acts to protect the profits of the corporations to the detriment of the American population.

Held is embroiled in his own fight with the FTC over the promotion of natural remedies for Diabetes, which he is challenging in court.

“If it can’t be patented by a pharmaceutical company, the chances are good that any health solution found in nature is being attacked by the FTC and FDA. A fifth grader could figure out who they are protecting, and it’s not the American people.”

As an example, Held points out, Diamond Foods, makers of Diamond Culinary Nuts, has cited clinical studies and other scientifically validated data on their web site, showing that the Omega 3 fatty acids found in walnuts “can help lower cholesterol; protect against heart disease, stroke and some cancers; ease arthritis and other inflammatory diseases; and even fight depression and other mental illnesses.”

Earlier this year the company received a warning letter from the FTC stating that “Because of these intended uses, your walnut products are drugs within the meaning of section 201 (g)(1)(B) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321(g)(B)]. Your walnut products are also new drugs under section 201(p) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321(p)] [and] may not be legally marketed with the above claims in the United States without an approved new drug application.”

The absurdity of classifying a nut as a drug is not lost on Held. “According to this thinking, we’re not allowed to say that heart healthy foods provided by nature can be an option to the expensive and questionable pharmaceutical ‘solutions’.

“The tyranny of FTC censorship, and the threat they hold of financial ruin for anyone who dares say that healthy foods can help your body, has to end.”
