In an attempt to bolster an upcoming trial against a nutritional supplement company, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a press release that apparently attempts to put the company, Wellness Support Network (WSN), in its grave before the legal case has even begun.

Having unilaterally decided that supplements and vitamins cannot help diabetes, the agency’s PR department has proclaimed that any statements to the contrary are “phony claims”. The Wellness Support Network, fighting back with an online community, Wellness Truth Network, claims that even the headline of the FTC’s press release — “FTC Charges Marketer for Making Phony Claims That Dietary Supplements Can Treat and Prevent Diabetes” – is a brazen attempt to use the media to establish and confirm guilt before a trial date has even been set.

Bob Held, CEO of Wellness Support Network, believes this has gone on long enough, and accuses the FTC of censorship of free speech on an ongoing basis. 

Maintaining that dietary supplements do indeed help in the treatment of diabetes, Held says that “the FTC’s overbroad regulation and enforcement strategy is not just contrary to the best interests of the public, but also contrary to federal law, including the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which protects producers of natural remedies.”

“Americans”, he says, “have a basic right to know, to gather information about their health, and to make an informed selection from the options.

“There is no justification for the FTC to publicly censure a business that has yet to be found guilty. We are vigorously defending this case and are prepared to address the issues raised in the litigation and FTC’s unlawful regulation of health based products in a public forum.”

The Wellness Support Network is one in a long chain of providers of natural health solutions to be sued and face shut down attempts by the FTC. Its predecessors include Dr. Weil, threatening his company regarding his immune-boosting supplements.  Earlier this year, the FTC was defeated in court over its attempt to censor truthful health claims about selenium.

Should the Wellness Support Network prevail, what many refer to as the tyranny of the FDA and FTC could come to an end.
